Royal Copenhagen was founded by Frantz Heinrich Müller as the Royal Porcelain Factory, with the support of the widowed Queen Juliane Marie after Frederik V.

The story of Royal Copenhagen and the blue fluted frame

In the first part of the 18th century, it was only in Meissin in Germany that the formula for porcelain was known in Europe. But the mineralogist Frants Heinrich Müller thus broke the code in 1774, and thus succeeded in producing porcelain in Copenhagen to the great delight of the Danish royal house.

At first, porcelain from Royal Copenhagen was confusingly similar to Chinese porcelain when Müller, like many other European porcelain manufacturers, drew inspiration from China. It was also from China that Müller picked up the motif of the fine stylized chrysanthemum.

The chrysanthemum flower has thus been used as inspiration for the blue fluted motif, albeit in a simplified version. Exactly why this porcelain frame has been christened Blue Fluted by no one with certainty, but several believe that the name either refers to the fluted shape which is reminiscent of a seashell or to the blue color.

The story of the blue color

The cobalt blue color can be dated all the way back to 2600 BC. in Egyptian ceramics. And the color has thus been used up through the centuries to give glass, glaze and ceramics color and intensity. It is precisely the blue cobalt color that Royal Copenhagen has gradually specialized in. Dear child has many names, and so does the cobalt blue color. The color used for the decoration of the blue fluted is called Cobalt Zinc Silicate. This particular color is especially good for ceramics as it both gives great intensity, is easy to work with and can withstand the high temperatures of the stove.

Royal Copenhagen as a modern design company

The blue fluted frame is the first and original frame produced by Royal Copenhagen. The frame has now become a Danish cultural heritage. Since then, new variants and interpretations have been added to Royal Copenhagen’s range of porcelain products. This means that Royal Copenhagen now produces handmade porcelain with motifs other than the classic blue fluted.

Take for example the Elements series which was designed in 2011 and has the rifles from the blue fluted, the edge from the Half Blonde series and the notches from the Flora Danica series.

In addition, there is also the new classic, Megamussel, where floral motifs are scaled up. The frame is available in both cobalt as well as Black Mega Riflet. Furthermore, Royal Copenhagen now also produces porcelain frames without decoration, so it appears naked with a simple and elegant expression. Take, for example, the Riflet, Elements and Half Lace series in white. Mix and match the different series for a modern and personal expression, or collect whole series and create a sumptuous, simple and classic look.
